about

London based indie four piece Dead Slow Hoot celebrate uncertainty on their latest single ‘The
Moistest Beak’ - which is accompanied by a country & western themed music video featuring The
Cactus Club, an LGTBQ+ line dancing club who’ve been operating in London since the early ‘90s.

Spawning from a rebellious tangent in a gospel choir backing band, and named after grammatically questionable road sign - Dead Slow Hoot gained early support from the likes of 6Music and BBC Introducing from their debut album ‘No Reunions’ and their most recent EP ‘A Kinder Kind’. The band have always straddled genres and have gone to great lengths to challenge themselves to create something unique with every release, all the while tying it all together with a reverence for poetic lyrics and bittersweet stories. ‘The Moistest Beak’ is a perfect example of this progression - it marks the greatest departure from their usual sound and style, and yet it doesn’t feel like it could be written in quite the same way by anyone else. Lead singer, Hugo Lynch, had this to say about the songwriting process:

“The Moistest Beak is a song that started life in the midst of a covid lockdown as a very basic chord progression that sounded nothing like a normal Dead Slow Hoot song - because it sounded happy! -but it was so catchy I knew I had to use it. Most of my lyrics are like letters I write to myself when I feel down, and it’s always felt very alien writing to something so upbeat. Fast-forward a year and I had pieced the first 2 verses together out of about 20 that I’d written over that time. I couldn’t figure out who I was writing for or to until I wrote the final verse and suddenly everything fell into place.”
